Clearing the Path for the Future of Healthcare in Downtown NOLA: Implosion of Canal Street Hotel taking place Sunday

July 23rd, 2012 2:02PM

On July 22 at 8:00 am, the Claiborne Towers building on Canal Street and Claiborne Avenue just outside Downtown was imploded to make way for the new University Medical Center, a state-of-the-art teaching hospital. The Downtown Development District was instrumental in securing the construction of the University Medical Center. The implosion of the Claiborne Towers building is one of the last major demolitions on the new hospital footprint. The site of the former hotel may be used for new medical office buildings.

Only a small section of Downtown were affected by the implosion on Sunday morning. The Downtown Development District Clean Teams committed additional crews in the impacted area after the implosion and once demolition crews were finished.
